European Doctorate Label

The "European Doctorate" is a label awarded by the University of Lille, which applies to the national doctoral diploma and recognises the European dimension of the doctoral project. It is awarded to doctoral candidates registered in member countries of the EU/EEA and other free trade states (Austria, Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden, Lichtenstein)

There are several conditions involve to obtain the label :

  • You need to be enrolled in a higher education institution in a European Research Area member country
  • It is necessary to conduct research for a minimum of three months in a European country other than your own
    • The head of the hosting institution will issue a certificate upon completion of the course. This certificate will be sent to the jury for further deliberation before the European label is awarded
  • Authorisation to defend the thesis is granted on the basis of reports written by at least three professors, two of whom must be from higher education institutions in two European countries other than the country where the defence takes place
    • The contact from the hosting lab cannot be an external member of the thesis defence examining committee
  • At least one member of the jury must be from a higher education institution in a European country other than the country where the defence takes place
  • A portion of the oral presentation must be delivered in English or an official language of the European Community other than the language spoken in the country where the defence takes place

Diploma:

  • The European Doctorate Label is not printed on the diploma but is mentioned on an additional certificate in French and English
