Thesis Management and Supervision

At the ED SMRE, doctoral candidates are placed under the control and responsibility of a thesis supervisor. A thesis supervisor is a qualified researcher or teacher capable of supervising research (i.e. with a habilitation degree/HDR or equivalent). The thesis supervisor guides the doctoral candidate's research throughout their three years of doctoral studies, offering support and assistance. The doctoral project can be supervised by both the main supervisor and a co-supervisor from the same or a different lab, even one from a foreign country

The main role of the thesis supervisor is to guide the doctoral candidate in choosing the research methodology, training them in scientific analysis, helping to structure their research work, and promoting the results. This entails the thesis supervisor(s) providing personal support and dedicating a significant portion of their research time to the doctoral candidate

The thesis project team may also include a researcher or teacher-researcher who does not have a habilitation degree but whose expertise is crucial for the smooth progress of the doctoral candidate's research. In this case, the aforementioned researcher or teacher-researcher without an HDR can co-supervise the thesis project

The Procedure at the ED SMRE:

In the case of assisted supervision outside the University of Lille/IMT Nord Europe/Centrale Lille Institute, you must submit a request to establish an assisted supervision/management agreement in addition to the application form

PLEASE NOTE: There is no special procedure for internal assisted supervision, but the co-supervisor/co-manager must be declared on ADUM and all registration, registration renewal, and CIF forms

Provisional timetable CS & CFVU restricted to staff qualified to supervise research (HDR and application for supervision without HDR) at ULille

Monitoring of training in ethics and scientific integrity by Phd supervisors

Following the decision of the ED Council on 15/12/2023, colleagues applying for the HDR and colleagues applying for a directorship or co-directorship without an HDR are required to have completed training in ethics and scientific integrity before recruiting their first doctoral student
In addition, those who have already completed the HDR will also have to take the ethics training course and will have to send the certificate of successful completion of the MOOC to the ED secretariat. This certificate will be required for all new thesis applications from the start of the 2025 academic year

Multiple Stakeholders of the Doctorate at the GS SMRE

When it comes to the people involved in a doctoral project, in addition to the doctoral candidate and their supervisor, there may also be a co-supervisor or co-manager. They receive support from the employer, sponsor, research group with its director, doctoral school with its director, institution, and associations.
