Additional Assignments

The duties of contract doctoral candidates, who are recruited for a 3-year period to complete their studies under a doctoral agreement, may include:

  • exclusive dedication to research related to the preparation of the thesis;
  • additional assignments up to a maximum of 1/6th of their working time, which may include teaching, providing expertise, disseminating scientific and technical information, and promoting research results.

Our auxiliary institutions (Centrale Lille Institute, University of Lille, IMT Nord Europe) offer doctoral candidates extra teaching activities every year. Teaching assignments are generally offered to doctoral candidates between April and June, taking into account the needs of the teaching departments for the following academic year.
Second- and Third-year students are given priority, but First-year students are also eligible. The maximum number of tutorial hours per year may be 64.

The doctoral candidate's teaching assignment involves:

  • learning to adapt to an audience, presenting ideas, and persuading effectively;
  • training to become a teacher-researcher.

Administrative procedure :

Decree no. 2016-1173 of 29 August 2016, amending Decree no. 2009-464 of 23 April 2009, sets out the regulatory provisions relating to contract doctoral candidates. Doctoral candidates who plan to undertake an additional teaching assignment must apply for an amendment to their doctoral agreement. The amendment needs to be approved by their thesis supervisor, research group director, department director, and doctoral school director

Only those benefiting from a doctoral agreement are allowed to apply

Doctoral students from the Ecole Normale Supérieure must submit a teaching request at the start of their contract

Compensation :

In addition to the monthly compensation, the number of hours worked over 12 months is also taken into account

During their three-year thesis period, doctoral candidates have the opportunity to work as consultants in various non-academic settings, such as companies, local authorities, societies, government departments, etc
The candidate should highlight their qualities and skills as a young researcher for the requesting organisation. The doctoral candidate can gain valuable training by utilising their skills while fully immersed in the socio-economic environment

They provide the partner institution with :

  • their research skills,
  • their working methods,
  • their autonomy,
  • their problem-solving skills, in science and in general applications

Administrative procedure :

Doctoral candidates who plan to take on additional consultancy work need to obtain the consent of their thesis supervisor, research group director, and doctoral school director. They can do this by submitting a request for an amendment to their doctoral agreement
After receiving a positive opinion and outlining the work assignment project with a partner, a tripartite partnership agreement is drawn up between the candidate, the institution where they are registered, and the company (or local authority, association, government departments, etc.)
The partnership agreement sets out the content of the assignment, the duration (from 1 day to a maximum of 32 days/year) and the service cost, which the company will pay to the candidate's institution

Compensation :

In addition to the monthly compensation, the number of days of additional work on the assignment over 12 months is also taken into account

The goal of a doctoral candidate is to disseminate scientific and technical information, as well as promote the research activities, outcomes, and skills of their lab's teacher-researchers and researchers to various individuals, including students, high school teachers, socio-economic stakeholders, and the general public
This task is an additional responsibility that falls within the candidate's area of expertise, but it may not be directly related to their research topic. The duration of the assignment may not exceed 32 days per year

Administrative procedure :

A tripartite agreement is drawn up by the institution where the doctoral candidate is registered. The doctoral agreement is then amended accordingly (after approval by the thesis supervisor, the research group and the doctoral school)

Compensation :

In addition to the monthly compensation, the number of days of additional work on the assignment over 12 months is also taken into account
